New start in Nova Scotia

So July 1st, my husband and I moved to Nova Scotia from Ontario. Why you ask?
After 2 visits over the span of a couple of years, we fell in love with it's beauty. The ocean, the trails, and beaches are amazing. The lifestyle is slower here which we found to be desirable. In Ontario, people are acustomed to "go go go". On the other hand, Nova Scotians tend to be a bit more laid back. To us, this meant our blood pressure could go down and the number of grey hairs could also decrease! Who wouldn't love to live near the ocean? The sound of the waves crashing on the beach, the smell of the ocean air....to us, that is heaven.

It is now July 15th. We have visited the beach several times and infact I got myself quite the sunburn the last trip. The people here, while nice, seem to be hesitant about letting us in to their "circle of trust". They are polite (as is required by social etiquette standards) but seem to be guarded. In my opinion, they aren't delighted to know that we are not only on their turf, but will also be taking jobs away. I guess that is a concern across the world, in any country. I guess this is my first time witnessing it first-hand.

Seeing the "mistrust" (if you will), makes me a bit un-easy about going out there and socializing in an attempt to make friends. Not sure I am prepared to be rejected. Once again, I suppose that is a common concern for anyone in any place. Having said that, my husband and I must truck-on and get out there. I intend to do some research to find social groups or clubs to meet people with similar interests in the area. Also, I'm sure once we get jobs, it will be easy to meet people and hopefully make friends.

Have you ever felt this way? Was it as a result of a big move? Any advice for me?

*Allie*
